JSPS Invitational Fellowship for Research in Japan

Let's be honest. Most research fellowships come with a catch.

Either the money is too little, or you have to teach 5 courses while trying to do research on the side, or the application process is so complicated that you give up before you even start.

This fellowship is different. And once you understand what it actually offers, you'll wonder why more Indian researchers aren't talking about it.

What Is JSPS?

JSPS stands for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Think of it as Japan's version of our SERB or DST — but with a much bigger global reach.

Since 1958, JSPS has been bringing top researchers from all over the world to Japan to collaborate with Japanese scientists, share ideas, and do serious research. It's not a new or untested program. It has decades of credibility behind it.

And the best part? It covers all fields — humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, everything.

Long-Term and Short-Term

The fellowship has two options depending on how much time you can spare.

Long-Term is for researchers who want to go deep. You stay in Japan for 2 to 10 months and work on a proper collaborative research project with your Japanese host.

Short-Term is for those who want focused academic exchanges — discussions, lectures, joint work — over 14 to 60 days.

Both are fully funded. Both are open to Indian researchers.

Are You Eligible? Here's What You Need

India has full diplomatic relations with Japan, so Indian researchers are welcome to apply.

But there are a few conditions you need to meet:

  1. You must be a full-time researcher at a university or research institution abroad (this is important — part-time positions don't qualify)
  2. You should hold a position equal to professor, associate professor, assistant professor, or professor emeritus
  3. OR — if your position doesn't match these titles exactly — you can still apply if it has been 6 or more years since you got your PhD and you have been doing continuous research since then

So if you're faculty at IIT, IISc, IISER, Delhi University, a CSIR lab, or any central university — you most likely qualify.

What You Get

This is what makes the JSPS fellowship stand out from most others.

What You GetAmount
Monthly stipend (Long-term)¥387,600 (~₹2.2–2.5 lakh/month)
Daily stipend (Short-term)¥18,000 per day
Round-trip economy airfareFully covered
Overseas travel insuranceFully covered
Research support allowanceUp to ¥1,50,000 (extra)

That monthly figure is more than what many senior scientists earn in India — and Japan is covering your flights and health insurance on top of that.

One important note about the airfare: if you are already living in Japan before your fellowship starts, the outbound airfare will not be covered. So this benefit is mainly for those travelling from their home country.

The research support allowance (up to ¥1,50,000) is applied for by your Japanese host researcher through their institution — not by you directly. Make sure your host is aware of this.

How to Apply — Step by Step

This is where most blogs get vague. Let's break it down clearly.

Step 1 — Find a Japanese Host Researcher

This is the single most important step, and it's also the one that takes the most time.

You need a professor or researcher at an eligible Japanese university or institution who is willing to host you and work with you. Without a host, there is no application.

Start by searching on Google Scholar, ResearchGate, or the websites of Japanese universities in your field. Email Japanese professors whose work connects with yours. Be specific, be genuine, and be patient — finding the right host can take a few months.

Step 2 — Your Host Submits the Application

Here's something that surprises many people: you don't submit the application yourself.

Your Japanese host researcher submits the application on your behalf — first through their institution's head, and then to JSPS via the JSPS Electronic Application System.

Step 3 — Prepare Your Documents

There are three main forms:

  1. Form L-1 / S-1 — Filled by your host researcher directly on the JSPS website (this is the basic application info)
  2. Form L-2 / S-2 — The Research Proposal, filled jointly by you and your host together
  3. Form L-3 / S-3 — Your CV, filled by you (the overseas researcher)

Keep your research proposal sharp, focused, and practical. A vague proposal is the fastest way to get rejected.

Step 4 — Watch the Deadlines

  1. Long-term fellowship: Opens and closes once a year
  2. Short-term fellowship: Opens twice a year, giving you two chances

For exact dates, check the official application schedule page: 👉 Click here

Also note: your host institution may have its own internal deadline that is a month or more earlier than JSPS's official deadline. Confirm this with your host early.

How Does JSPS Choose Fellows?

The selection is serious and merit-based. Multiple subject experts first review your documents. Then a panel looks at:

  1. The quality and clarity of your research proposal
  2. Your past research track record
  3. How strong and genuine the collaboration with your Japanese host is
  4. How realistic your research plan looks

You're not just being evaluated alone — your host's credibility and the strength of your collaboration also matter. That's another reason finding the right host early is so important.

Why Indian Researchers Should Take This Seriously

India and Japan have strong academic ties, especially in STEM, but also in history, culture, and social sciences.

A JSPS fellowship adds real weight to your academic profile. When you come back after 6 months at a top Japanese lab or university, your institution notices. Your students notice. Your next appraisal panel notices.

Beyond the money and the recognition, it also opens doors — future collaborations, joint grants, visits, and a research network that stays with you for years.

One Last Thing Before You Apply

Finding a Japanese host researcher is the hardest part of this whole process — and it starts with communication.

Japanese professors appreciate when you make the effort to understand their language and culture. Even a basic understanding of Japanese shows respect and makes a real difference in building that first connection.

If you're thinking about starting that journey, Yoisho is India's trusted Japanese language learning institute — helping students and researchers go from zero to confident Japanese speakers.

Because a fellowship this good deserves the right preparation.
